Windowfarm is an open source aquaponics project with the goal of developing hydroponic edible gardens for urban windows. Aimed at space maximization (vertical), low-impact and recycled, the window farm is a cool project you can do in a day with a water pump, some tubing, and old plastic water bottles.

Dubbed "Malthus," this Ikea-hacked project by Conceptual Devices pieces together a 100g fish tank, plastic grow beds, a pump and piping onto an IKEA Broder shelf, with wheels. Malthus is designed to be an in-home unit, and to grow one meal a day, a portion of fish with a side of salad.

Aquaponics farming has been growing steadily over the past years, it has especially gained traction in arid regions where water preservation is crucial. Aquaponics uses a symbiotic closed-loop system that cycles the same water between fish and plants, the fish produces nutrients and CO2 for the plants, and the plants in turn purifies the water and returns Oxygen to the fish. Today, many are setting up aquaponics systems at home, and growing their own produce and farming their own fish.

Today we bring you our first sustainable aquaponics setup from a fellow member. This sturdy 6-foot kit was hand constructed by Peter Bishop from Irvine, California, holding 100 gallons and featuring a bell-siphon ebb and flow system.
